Total blood volume can be calculated by the following equation:

Total blood volume = Erythrocyte stuff + Plasma stuff

TBV = hematocrit% * TBV + plasma% * TBV

(where hematocrit% + plasma% = 100%)

TBV = hematocrit% * TBV + plasma volume

and in this question

TBV = 0.4*TBV + 3L

0.6*TBV = 3L

TBV = 5 L
