All neonates should receive topical prophylaxis against bacterial conjunctivitis caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis. Erythromycin is the most commonly used prophylactic agent and functions by binding to the bacterial 50s ribosomal subunit and preventing bacterial protein synthesis.
