Spontaenous pneumothorax if you look at the right chest, there is a backwards figure 3 looking line around ribs 6-7. That is the collapsed lung, you need to drain the air out so the lung can reinflate.

  • Tall, young men are prone to spontaneous pneumothorax, with the chest x-ray in this stem showing a right-sided pneumothorax (vascular lines donโ€™t extend to periphery and you can actually see a clear outline of the collapsed lung within the lung field)
  • A small (<2 cm), stable, asymptomatic pneumothorax can often be managed conservatively with observation (https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMoa1910775)
  • The patient in this stem is symptomatic and having difficulty breathing, so in this case we would want to either perform a tube/needle thoracostomy
