When you're on Long Island, according to Goljan, you're GOING to get a tick bite if your legs are exposed. This girl was working as a lifeguard. The ixodes tick is native to the NE USA. While we typically associated the maltese cross with babesia, there is also an intraerythrotic ring form. This girl also had a splenectomy, which increases the risk of severe disease.
