The proximal tubule is the site of reabsorption of the majority of electrolytes (HC03- Na+, CI-, P043-, K+), water uric acid, glucose, and amino acids in the initial glomerular filtrate.
It requires a decreased intracellular sodium concentration generated by the Na/K+-ATPase pump and thus is sensitive to hypoxia. ("anoxic injury")
